Alberta Human Services will be hosting the annual Alberta FASD Conference October 22-23, 2012 at the Delta Edmonton South Hotel and Conference Centre. The two-day conference will feature several keynote speakers, a variety of breakout sessions, and a community showcase and networking reception. This year’s conference will also feature a special focus on building and strengthening connections, relationships and communities.

November 21-22, 2011: Promising Practices, Promising Futures FASD Conference [Calgary]

Description:
We invite you to join us in this important multidisciplinary conference focused on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and its impact on individuals, families, communities and society at large. Fall 2010 FASD Learning Series: Brain Box Sessions (Alberta)

The FASD Learning Series offers free education opportunities tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals and family members/caregivers affected by FASD, support service providers, healthcare providers, educators, legal and justice services, and professionals in the research and evaluation field. These sessions also provide participants the opportunity to interact with the presenter during a facilitated Q&A period, and meet and share with people from all areas of the FASD field.

2009 November 25-26: Training in Interviewing Women Regarding Substance Use in Pregnancy [Calgary]

Description: This two-day certificate (12 hours) workshop will focus on utilizing the OBD Triage Instrument, gathering accurate information necessary for medical evaluation and diagnosis within Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The focus is on best practices in respectful motivational interviewing techniques with biological mothers who may have consumed alcohol and/or drugs in their pregnancy. Screening includes exploration of various teratogenic possibilities and variables to ensure and enhance responsible medical evaluation by the diagnostic physician and clinic team.

2009 November 18-19: Workshop on Addictions Treatment Design for Individuals Living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder [Calgary]

Description: This two-day certificate (12 hours) workshop presented by the OBD Triage Institute, will focus on FASD sensitive treatment considerations, effective intervention strategies and intervention techniques for professionals involved in addictions prevention, treatment, counseling and aftercare.

The goals of this seminar are to:
Update clinical therapists and addictions specialists with the current medical, cognitive and sensory integration issues within this patient population.
Provide participants with evaluation tools to determine the best course of individualized treatment plan for the individual by evaluating medical disposition, social history, cultural factors and learning abilities.
Discuss variables in treatment modalities and establish strength-based, consistent provision of patient specific care and service delivery.

Description:
The Calgary John Howard Society is hosting a two-day workshop with Liz Lawryk of the OBD Triage Institute Workshop Description: The risk of criminal involvement for individuals diagnosed with FASD is typically higher due to a combination of variables within this disability. This two day course will focus on assisting professionals in designing supports based on the evaluation of the individual's physical, sensory, cognitive and socio-environmental factors. Discussion will include interviewing techniques, assessment of overall functioning abilities and consideration of strength-based patient-specific strategies.

Mary Berube (Vandenbrink), MSW, is well known professionally as an advocate, speaker, and programmer regarding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and substance use during pregnancy. She is also the adoptive mother of two young men who were diagnosed with FASD in their late teens. She has presented over 600 information sessions, seminars and workshops regarding FASD and its related secondary disabilities, and has participated in numerous media presentations and videos. She is committed to addressing the needs of substance using mothers through intensive supports and specialized services.

Description:
Part of the Staff/Partners Videoconference FASD Learning Series, this is an excellent opportunity for those working in the field of FASD to learn about FASD and depression.

This video seminar features Jacqueline R. Pei, BA, MEd, PhD, Assistant Professor in Educational Psychology, U of A. Dr. Pei began her career in mental health as a forensic counsellor working with young offenders. This early experience led her to return to school where she earned her PhD studying memory impairment in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Now in private practice – as a registered psychologist specializing in neuropsychological assessment – Jacqueline also works with the Glenrose Hospital’s FASD diagnostic team, teaches psychology at several post-secondary institutions, and volunteers with the Edmonton Support Network Walk-In Counselling program.
Her passion for bringing together research and clinical practice has now led her to take on a new challenge as an Assistant Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta.

Description:
Part of the Staff/Partners Videoconference FASD Learning Series, this is an excellent opportunity for those working in the field of FASD to learn about compassion fatigue.

Learning Objectives:

This video seminar features Paula J. Horky RN MN, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Child & Adolescent Mental Health Program. Paula has worked in the child, youth and adult areas of mental health programs in both urban and rural areas. She is currently a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Child & Adolescent Mental Health Programs. Paula discovered the work of Dr. Charles Figley in 1992 and realized she had to stop taking her ability to be compassionate for granted and begin to consciously incorporate strategies to prevent or at the very least mitigate the effects of Compassion Fatigue. She used her time in an MN program to learn more about Compassion Fatigue and have since made a commitment to inform colleagues about this issue.

Description:
ADHD - FASD Connections is session 3 of the Staff/Partners Videoconference FASD Learning Series. This event will feature Dr. David Shih, consulting psychiatrist with CASA Child, Adolescent, and Family Mental Health. Dr. David Shih is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who works with multidisciplinary teams at CASA Centre providing community psychiatric and mental health services to children from ages 3 to 17. He also worked for 12 years at the ADHD Clinic at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Shih is interested in the mind-body connection and the intimate interaction between human relationships and the brain.

This presentation is designed to describe sensory systems, sensory processing and sensory integration issues sometimes associated with diagnoses such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and downs syndrome. Adolescents and adults with FASD have a high frequency of emotional and behavioral problems that can range from difficulty coping with life's challenges to severe psychological and psychiatric disorders. In the absence of empirically validated effective treatment approaches, professionals and caregivers have been developing a "Wisdom of Practice" response to both the unique and common needs of individuals, their families, and service providers. This conference will highlight what has been shown through this "Wisdom of Practice" to be most effective in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues in individuals with FASD, and treatment and support for their families and service providers.
