WHAT’S WRONG WITH MY CHILD

This report focuses on the lifetime of damage that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome inflicts on grown children and young adults. The lives of several of these children are examined and reveals the tragic reactions of their unsuspecting adoptive parents, puzzled by children who are unable to learn, cannot remember and misbehave without fear or remorse. In light of these facts, the program forecasts the horrendous implications for society.
UNDERSTANDING WOMEN’S SUBSTANCE MISUSE; CREATING SOLUTIONS

The search for a better understanding of women recovering from substance misuse and thus preventing FAS was the purpose of creating this video. The women interviewed explore the process of their own recovery and empowerment. They strongly advocate preventing childhood traumas that often lead to “loss of self” and unresolved mental health problems later in life. This video must be reviewed due to its sensitive nature. It is strongly recommended that the professional is familiar with the participants.

'David Vandenbrink seems like a normal 21-year-old, bright and articulate. There is little to suggest that while in his mother's womb, he suffered permanent brain damage. His condition, fetal alcohol syndrome (F.A.S.), went undiagnosed for the first 18 years of his life, causing confusion, anger, and pain for both David, a Canadian Indian, and his non-native adoptive family. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a term used to describe a set of symptoms seen in some children born to women who drank alcohol during pregnancy. The damage can be subtle or severe, resulting in a wide range of symptoms in the areas of slowed growth, disfigurement, and damage to the brain. Associated behavioral problems include impulsiveness, poor judgment, and an inability to grasp the consequences of actions. This personal story, using video footage shot by David himself, along with the experiences of members of his family, is a hard look into the serious consequences of a little-known, but widespread, health problem.' This is a video on how alcohol affects the fetus and the brain development. It shows a UNBC research study on the affects of alcohol on mice in various stages of development. You’re eating for two is a video about nutrition before and during pregnancy. It also goes into nutrition for baby. A Doctor gives advice on weight gain during pregnancy, what to eat and what not to eat. It also touches on the harmful effects of drugs on the baby and that includes tobacco.

'This video is about the permanent damage done to the unborn fetus of a pregnant woman when she consumes alcohol. It offers clear prevention and intervention information to women, families and all members of aboriginal communities. Three families share their personal experiences in raising children and grandchildren with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The physical and behavioural characteristics of FASD are shown and explained during various stages of life. The emphasis is not on blaming women who consume alcohol during pregnancy - but on prevention, support and education. The video reaches out to all women who are pregnant or having unprotected sex, as well as educating families and communities, leaders and social/health professionals.'
